David cleared with 2 cuts and UA certificate

29 Jan 2013

Bejoy Nambiar's much talked-about David was cleared by the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) late on Monday night with just two minor cuts in the episode featuring Vinay Virmani.

It is learnt from reliable sources that the Examining Committee of the CBFC had ordered prominent cuts in the episode featuring Vinay Virmani which deals with the sensitive issue of religious fundamentalism.

Rather than take the cuts Bejoy went to the Revising Committee of the CBFC to fight against the Examining Committee's decision.

Interestingly the Tamil version of David got the same segment; featuring Tamil star Jeeva in place of Vinay, cleared without getting into the Revising Committee.

Says the source, "The same content in Tamil was censored with minor cuts after director Bejoy Nambiar sat down and discussed the content with the panel. But when it came to the Hindi version of David, the censor board put its foot down asking the director to cut some especially hard hitting and volatile scenes pertaining to religious fundamentalism."

Rather than take the cuts, Bejoy Nambiar took his film to the Examining Committee. After hours of debate on Monday evening the film was finally cleared with two minor cuts with a UA (parental guidance) certificate.

Says Bejoy, "I was keen to get a 'UA', because an 'A' certificate now means difficulty in telecast on satellite television. At the same time I was not willing to take the cuts. So we approached the Revising Committee. It's all done now."
