Akshay Kumar's Baby hits the right notes, Neeraj Pandey speaks

9 Dec 2014

The trailer of Akshay Kumar's new film Baby is out. The content is riveting, to say the least.

Anupam Kher who has been part of all three films that Pandey has directed so far says it is by far one of the most important films on international terrorism.

Says Neeraj Pandey, "I don't know how important it is. But we've done our best to create authenticity and not get carried away." The trailer shows a group of anti-terrorists from India gunning for a Pakistani terror mastermind, played by Rasheed Naz who was seew giving hate speeches in Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Ke Liye . Says Neeraj, "We have tried to cast actors who are culturally true to their characters. That immediately adds to the reality of the plot and presentation. We've also done away with songs and music. There is just one song in Baby, and that is not a lip-sync number. It's going to be used for promotional purposes." Baby is also important because it is Akshay Kumar's first non-comic role in a long time. All his recent releases including Entertainment and The Shaukeens have been comedies. Significantly, the trailer of Baby has no hint of humour. Not one character is seen to be smiling in the film.

Neeraj laughs at the grim observation. "I didn't observe this until you pointed it out to me. But let me assure you, there is comic relief in the film. Everybody is not dead serious all the time." Baby releases on January 23. It's a significant week for a film which according to the director tells us, "We must catch them (the terror masterminds) before they get us."
