Varun Dhawan's Badlapur is a Rs. 25 crore film - The complete details

19 Feb 2015

In the times of Twitter world turning trade experts, anything and everything is being accepted on face value, as long as it is sensational. Even though Varun Dhawan had made it crystal clear that Badlapur is his most cost effective as well as quickest shot film ever, there have been rumors of all kind floating around the Sriram Raghavan film. One such story making the rounds is around the film's budget.

"It is being said that the film has cost Rs. 50 crores to the makers (Eros and Dinesh Vijan). This is sheer nonsense and doesn't carry any basis whatsoever. The film has been made at around Rs. 16 crores with Rs. 9 crores set aside for P&A (Print and Advertising). This comes to around Rs. 25 crores, which is just perfect for a film like Badlapur which is commercial in its own way," informs our well-placed source.

Though no one associated with the film has any clue whatsoever around where did the 50 crore number come from, those from the industry are amused that rumors around this kind of budget were actually in circulation.

"Just imagine, Varun Dhawan was just one film old ( Student of the Year ) when he was signed for the film. The second most notable face in the film is Nawazuddin Siddiqui who has gone commercial in a major way only post Kick. Then there are four leading ladies and each of them has an ensemble appearance. Sriram Raghavan charges reasonably too. This leaves technicians and other crew members who carry remuneration as per basic payment model. The expenses of a film usually are high if one goes to foreign locales, shoots expensive item numbers and comes up with fancy multi-city tours global tours," the source adds.

Since Badlapur hasn't quite indulged in any of the aforementioned temptations, what with only one theme song shot with Varun, shooting taking place in the locales of Mumbai and Badlapur and promotional campaign been kept under control as well, the film has turned out to be a cost effective affair for all involved.

We tried contacting the makers for their comment but they understandably chose not to respond.

However, when we spoke to Sriram Raghavan about the genesis of the film, and how he convinced Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla to invest in Badlapur , he was at his cheeky best. He said, "The best thing about Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan) is that he is mainstream in an offbeat way. We were working on a couple of ideas and then I came across this story on the net. I thought he would find it too risky, but then he reacted to the story instinctively and emotionally. We didn't think about viability and so on. The first thing he said was - 'Let's make it, if you promise not to dilute it.'" "Of course I was on. Moreover, we were anyways very keen on making another film together because Agent Vinod was such a huge blockbuster," says Sriram in tongue in cheek tone.

That's the spirit Sriram!
