Shabana Azmi to play mafia queen in TV show Ek Maa Jo Lakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma

Shabana Azmi, who was last seen in Neerja, is all set to charm the audience with her skills on Television this time.

After starring in season 2 of Anil Kapoor's TV show 24, Shabana Azmi will be seen as a mafia queen in the TV serial Ek Maa Jo Lakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma. Shabana will be replacing Urvashi Sharma who has opted out of the show due to the time leap in the story. Azmi began shooting for the same on Tuesday.

Ek Maa Jo Lakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma focuses on a female don Jenabai Daruwali, a bootlegger, who was one of the famous female mafias in the 70s. She was also associated with big names in underworld like Haji Mastan, Vardharajan Mudaliar, Karim Lala and Dawood Ibrahim who addressed her as maasi. The show presents a story of how an emotional, vulnerable mother turned into a Godmother.

Talking about her character to a leading daily, Shabana Azmi said that her character Zeenatbi in Amma is more of a Robinhood character where some think of her as a hero, some as a villain. She said that her character is illiterate but street-smart and cunning.

In 1999, Shabana Azmi had played a similar character in the film The Godmother for which she bagged a National award.
