Dia Mirza calls out BCCI for hosting India Bangladesh match amidst deteriorating air quality in Delhi

1 Nov 2019

Actress Dia Mirza is a strong advocate of protecting the environment and speaks her heart out about things that cause harm to it. After the festival of Diwali, Delhi saw a major dip in the air quality as the city was choking under the stubble burning from neighboring states and blatant flouting of Supreme Court norms on bursting of crackers from 8 to 10 pm on Diwali. On Thursday, Dia Mirza took to Twitter to express her dismay at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)s decision to host the India-Bangladesh T20 match on November 3 in Delhi despite severs to extreme pollution levels. She wrote on Twitter: It is baffling that the @BCCI has decided to go ahead with the T20 match despite the AQIs severe 412! This complete denial of the hazards of exposing ourselves to pollution is what cripples our ability to seek and implement swift solutions. #MyRightToBreathe #BreatheLife. Dia posted another generic tweet on pollution and right to breathe. She wrote: And it was baffling last year, and the year before that. Come on #India! Lets work on acceptance and follow it with conclusive action. We have to shed this attitude of denial. The fundamental #RightToLife starts with our BREATH. #CleanAir #BeatAirPollution #MRTB #BreatheLife Incidentally, in 2017, Dia was appointed as UN Environments Goodwill Ambassador for India and she often speaks passionately on such issues. United Nations appoints Dia Mirza as advocate of Sustainable Development Goals

11 May 2019

As the United Nations Goodwill ambassador for the environment, Dia Mirza has always been vocal about the importance of having an eco-friendly lifestyle and has also campaigned for the cause on more than one occasion. Today, the United Nations has commissioned Mirza as the advocate of Sustainable Development Goals alongside respected and renowned individuals like Founder and Executive Chairman of the Alibaba Group Mr. Jack Ma, Actor Forest Whitaker, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Prime Minister of Norway Ms Erna Solberg, President of Ghana Mr. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo amongst others. The announcement was made this morning by the Secretary General of the United Nations adding that Mirzas role will entail raising awareness, inspiring greater ambition and pushing for faster action on the SDGs. These responsibilities will help accelerate the United Nations objective of achieving the SDGs by 2030. Speaking of the honour that she has received, Dia Mirza said, I am deeply honoured and consider it a privilege to be appointed the UN Secretary Generals Advocate of Sustainable Development Goals. I will strive to convey the importance of achieving sustainable development through all mediums and platforms I have access to. While every single sustainable development goal is critical, none of the rest will be achievable if we collectively do not recognize the interconnectedness between people and environment. Our health and well-being are connected to the environment and when we harm the environment, we actually harm ourselves. As an advocate for the environment my efforts will be focused on environmental protection, human and child rights. This opportunity will enable me to build partnerships and work alongside great global influencers and I truly hope to be a part of much needed change. Dia Mirza has been an environmental change maker and works with various organizations in the likes of Wildlife Trust of India, Sanctuary Asia and Save the Children to use her position to reach maximum people in the country.

Dia Mirza comes in support of CSSG #AndStilliRise campaign

18 Mar 2015

When it comes to voicing out one's opinions, there won't be too many to lead the pack. But many Bollywood celebrities today are coming out of their way to show their support towards the cause they believe in. One such persona is Dia Mirza who has always come forward to lend her voice for various social initiatives.

This time around, she has associated herself with a Delhi based NGO, which works towards the betterment of underprivileged by giving opportunity to work in creative sectors. This year, the said NGO (Creative Services Support Group) has put together a platform that will highlight gender equality and woman empowerment. As a part of the larger picture for the current year, the NGO has planned a unique exhibition where writing works of women and girls across the world will be showcased to reflect how similar they are, regardless of where they hail from. And when the NGO approached Dia to be a part of this campaign, she not only gave her nod to shoot a video, but also reached out to Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chadha to recite this powerfully worded poem. The video will premiere at an exhibition in Delhi towards the end of this month.

Speaking about the cause, Dia said, "I feel privileged to be able to lend my voice in support to CSSG #AndStilliRise campaign. And I feel very blessed to be able to bring people together to make a difference. Women will be truly empowered the day women RISE in support of women".

Dia Mirza-Sahil Sangha tie the knot amidst chants & whoops

20 Oct 2014

Dia Mirza's wedding in Delhi on Saturday evening with filmmaker Sahil Sangha was supposed to be a non-filmy affair.

However some of Dia's dear friends from the film industry did finally turn up. These were mostly Dia's old buddies and the entire team of her first production Love Breakups Zindagi was there. This was the film during which Dia's relationship with Sahil grew and cemented into an indelible togetherness. Hence the presence of the film's team. There was Zayed Khan who had played Dia's male lead in Love Breakups Zindagi. There were Pallavi Sharda and Satyadeep Mishra who played the second lead. There was also Cyrus Sahukar who was part of the film's cast.

Interestingly Aditi Rao Hydari who was formerly married to Satyadeep Mishra was also at the Dia's wedding. Not too often would you find this former couple together at the same venue. Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta (with husband Mahesh Bhupati), and Sophie Choudry, three of Dia's oldest friends, danced so hard at the wedding that the mandap rocked.

Veteran actor Roshan Seth and filmmaker Raj Kumar Hirani were also present to bless the couple.

Says a special invitee, "The wedding was at Roshan Farms in Ghitorni on M.G Road in Delhi. The entire place was done up in Dia's favourite colour white. And the full venue was redolent of rajnigandha flowers. It is Dia's favourite flower and she wanted the fragrance to be all pervasive at her wedding. The food was mughlai and continental. And there was an entire section at the food counter devoted to Bengali desserts since Dia's mom is Bengali. Dia wore a stunning but restrained Ritu Kumar bridal outfit, while Sahil was dressed up by Raghvendra Rathore. The wedding was conducted according to Arya Samaj rituals. And the reception followed immediately after."

Director Nikhil Advani described the wedding as 'superb'. "Lots of family and friends. The couple looked radiant. The arrangements were first-rate. The food was to die for. I was not there as Dia's guest. I was Sahil's invitee. Sahil had assisted me in Salaam-e-Ishq. So I was part of the baraati," said Advani.

Cyrus Sahukar who was definitely Dia's guest said, "The wedding was just fabulous. It was so elegantly and beautifully done."
