SRK addresses 'Pathaan' controversy by comparing himself, John, Deepika to 'Amar Akbar Anthony'

30 Jan 2023

Stating that everything is done in the name of entertainment, Shah Rukh spoke about portraying different roles in movies and requested people to not take their alter egos too seriously. He said, "Sabka maksad ek hi hota hai. We should spread happiness, brotherhood, love, kindness, even when I'm playing a bad guy like in Darr. Even if I'm playing a Baazigar, even if John is being bad in a film. None of us are bad.""We are all playing characters to make you happy. If we say things in the film, none of them are meant to hurt any sentiment or anybody. It is just entertainment," continued Shah Rukh. The actor added, "We love each other, we joke with each other. We have fun with each other. Fun, entertainment should be left at that. Don't take it more seriously. We all are one. All of us are loving each other and trying to make that love spread just to tell you in a very simple manner... this is Deepika Padukone, yeh Amar hain. Main Shah Rukh Khan hoon, main Akbar hoon. Yeh John hain, yeh Anthony hain. And this is what makes cinema."Prior to the release of 'Pathaan' there was a campaign to boycott the Shah Rukh starrer and some objectionable words were used against him on social media. However, all this did not affect its box office numbers as 'Pathaan' received a massive response from viewers and SRK's fandom globally has warmly welcomed the actor to his movie after four years. The film also entered the Rs 100 crore club on its opening day and has grossed a total collection of Rs 542 crore in 5 days.

Joe and Anthony Russos AGBO sells $400M stake to Tokyo-listed gaming company Nexon

6 Jan 2022

AGBO, the artist-led independent banner led by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo, has received a $400 million investment from Nexon Co., the Japanese video game maker.According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal which values AGBO at $1.1 billion as Nexon takes a 38 percent stake, will accelerate the global expansion of Nexons existing and new franchise intellectual property into film and TV and will also fuel AGBO as it develops, produces and owns tentpole-led entertainment universes reaching global audiences via games and virtual world experiences.AGBO CEO Jason Bergsman, who leads strategy and business operations at the Russo brothers indie banner said, Weve proven early success at AGBO to create entertainment franchises at a global scale, and this investment from Nexon allows us to do even more of that, to continue to press the envelope on their ambitions and accelerate what were already doing. He added that while the Russo brothers will continue to make smaller films away from the superhero arena like the Tom Holland starrer Cherry, they will mostly be working on a broad global creative canvas as they expand onto more digital platforms and world-facing streaming platforms look for content that appeals to audiences globally. While AGBO has already begun early discussions with Netflix on a video game based on the Extraction property, the Russo brothers more broadly will look to do cross-platform collaborations with Nexon as each partner seeks to collectively extend its own IP onto additional media platforms aimed at global consumers. As its ambitions grow with Nexon backing, the Tokyo-listed gaming company has committed to invest up to another $100 million in the first half of 2022, if AGBO makes the request.Nexon, van Dyk explains, as a successful producer of online virtual worlds in Asia like Dungeon Fighter, The Kingdom of the Winds, MapleStory and KartRider, through its partnership with AGBO will expand into additional world markets across games, film, TV, merchandising and other experiences.AGBO will continue as an independent entity, with the Russo brothers and their executives maintaining majority control over the company. The Russo brothers and producing partner Larocca launched AGBO in 2017 and have since worked on films and TV series with partners like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, NBC Universal, Disney, Apple TV+, A24 and Roku. Before that, the Russo brothers and the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, AGBOs co-presidents of story, partnered to direct and write four Marvel films, which netted $7 billion at the box office.AGBOs current slate includes Extraction 2, a sequel for Netflix; Citadel, a global event series for Amazon Prime; The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, for Netflix; and the Russo brothers will next direct the Electric State adaptation for Universal, to include a TV component.

Bohemian Rhapsodys Anthony McCarten files lawsuit Queen Biopic Producers Over Profits; Claim The Blockbuster Is $51M In The Red

19 Nov 2021

Bohemian Rhapsody screenwriter Anthony McCarten has filed a breach of contract suit against Graham King and his GK Films for money owed on the 2018 Academy Award Best Picture-nominated film about Queen and its iconic singer Freddie Mercury.According to a report in Deadline, the lawsuit shows that the $55 million budget film grossed $911 million worldwide, and yet according to accounting statements issued by 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, Bohemian Rhapsody is in the red, to the tune of $51 million. The suit names King and his GK Films and not Fox or Disney, which acquired the studio and holds Bohemian Rhapsody currently.McCarten maintains a deal directly with King to receive 5% of GKs take but King, eventually turned over all of those deals to Fox and now Disney. McCarten states that the deal accounting definitions changed and he has not been paid a cent from his backend deal and that King has been unresponsive to his appeals to get paid.McCarten, with his Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump Holley LLP attorneys, are seeking monetary damages in an amount to be proven at trial, a full accounting of the movie, and a judicial declaration of the parties contractual rights and duties in connection with the Writers Agreement.By this action, McCarten seeks to hold GK Films to its promise in the Writers Agreement, says the 50-page filing on November 17 in LA Superior Court, citing the first of three deals the scribe struck with production company WAGW, Inc in 2015 for an amount equal to 5% of 100% of the Net Proceeds'.Fox boarded the Queen biopic in 2016. Representatives for GK Films tell Deadline that they believe Fox/Disney should be a party to this action and will be reaching out to them forthwith to consult on future responses. The studio is insisting McCarten is only due any profits via their Defined Net Proceeds definition, rather than GK Films standard Net Proceeds definition, as modified through good faith negotiation. As per the suit, as McCarten was negotiating his fee for the film, anticipated a Coming to America scenario like he is now in and believed a solution had been agreed on:Relevant here, at the time he entered the Writers Agreement, McCarten was aware of the reputation major studios have for snatching losses from the jaws of profits-most notably, by defining profits in byzantine ways and then applying arbitrary, onerous distribution fees administrative fees, overhead fees, etc. At the same time, McCarten knew that indie producers, such as GK Films-which had famously financed the $156-$170 million Hugo, among other mid- and big-budget projects offered a little less money upfront than did the major studios, but more favorable backend definitions. GK Films, for its part, embraced the reputation. For example, late in the negotiations, when he was frustrated over the low fixed fees that would inspire the side letter, McCarten called Denis OSullivan, a then-GK Films executive. OSullivan told McCarten, The number is what it is, but Graham wants me to tell you that as he did with Cameron Diaz on Gangs of New York, he will take care of you in success.McCarten, no industry na f, understood what Graham was telling him, and what he wasnt telling him. He-Graham King, not Fox, and not any other studio-was going to make up for the low fixed fees by paying him out on the backend. But only in success. With this background, it made perfect sense that the definition would be that of GK Films, and the net proceeds those of GK Films. Simply put, McCarten understood that GK Films Net Proceeds would actually resemble 5 percent of what GK Films made on the Picture-the difference between GK Films actual and net proceeds being the home video royalty and his unrecouped development expenses (if any). And there was no question GK Films net proceeds definition would be more favorable to him than whatever a major studio called its net profit definition.McCarten is one of the elite screenwriters of fact-based biographical pictures. Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Actor Oscar honors for Rami Malek and The Theory of Everything did the same for Eddie Redmayne and Darkest Hour claimed the prize for Gary Oldman. More recently, The Two Popes garnered nominations for its stars Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. On the work front, He has in the works the Kasi Lemmons-directed Whitney Houston film I Wanna Dance With Somebody at Sony. He is a producer on that film.
