Al Capone, Americas most notorious gangster who died 70 years ago, is one of the sources of inspiration for Arjun Rampal to play Arun Gawli in the bio-pic Daddy that Ashim Ahluwalia has made. Now as the release of Daddy approaches Arjun wants to involve Capones family, get them to watch his film and meet the real-life Gawli. In fact the enterprising producer-actor has been stealthily making trips to the US to work out the Capone connection which will soon materialize. Director Aushim Ahluwalia who earlier made the dark stark bio-pic Miss Lovely on the horror specialists the Ramsay Brothers, has clearly been inspired by Capone in Daddy.Says Arjun, Al Capone was the Big Daddy of crime in America. But he was also a philanthropist and a socially-concerned individual. Ive played Gawli as an honest simple dedicated individual with a dark side to his personality. I see many similarities between Gawli and Capone. It remains to be seen how the Capone clan reacts to the Gawali bio-pic and to Arjuns performance. Arjun also intends to introduce Gawli to the Capone family.

Arjun Rampal s much awaited film; Daddy is a biopic on gangster-politician Arun Gawli. Besides co-producing the project, Rampal has also forayed into script writing with this movie. He has been credited for co-writing the screenplay along with director Ashim Ahluwalia. Explaining the new role, Rampal says, Three years ago, someone approached me to play Gawli. I was taken aback because I didnt understand how they thought Id fit the bill. They gave me a script that was far removed from Gawlis actual life. So, I refused to do it. But the idea stayed with me and I began researching about him. I was intrigued that he is called Daddy and not Bhai or Dada. I started meeting people who knew him and decided to put pen and paper together. I locked myself in a hotel room for almost two months and started writing. Rampal isnt new to writing although he has done it in a personal capacity, in the form of writing poetry and short stories. This was a completely different experience; it was the first time I wrote a screenplay. I had to make sure that it didnt turn out to be a propaganda film, where we showed him as a Good Samaritan; neither could he have been an out-and-out antihero. Rampal is planning to organise a screening for the residents of Bycullas Dagdi Chawl, Gawlis stronghold and a gated community where his family continues to live. It was from here that a mill worker transformed into a member of the local mafia, and finally a politician in the 1990s. We are still a month away from the release. I plan to show them the film, which is based on a man they love and admire, he says. Ashim Ahluwalia, who won the National Award Special Jury for Miss Lovely , isnt someone whom a producer or an actor can easily convince to collaborate for a film. Nonetheless, Arjun Rampal got lucky to get the director to come on board for Daddy , his biopic on the life of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli that releases on September 8, 2017. Considering the director was being wooed by major production houses, it might have been a nerve-wracking experience to get his nod, and the biopic subject did the trick in this case. Ashim was not only impressed by Arjuns dedication to the project, but also moved by the sincerity with which he pursued it. Breaking the norm and pushing the creative envelope has always seemed natural for the director, as he enthuses, There are always risks in the kind of films I like to make. I dont enjoy safe movies. For someone who believes in creating an experience rather than just entertainment for the masses, the biopic was a story that seduced Ashim into saying yes. Also the fact that the film was set in Mumbai made it easy for the director to say yes. He explains, Daddy was about me reconnecting with my city. A big part of me belongs to the street, feeds off its energy, thrives on the long relationships Ive had, not all people like us many are from different worlds. But we live that hybridity here every day. His journey with film began the minute he met Arjun and was mesmerised by the person on whom it was to be made. It wouldnt be wrong to say that getting the reclusive director on board for this biopic was nothing less than a feat for the makers.
