83 screen sharing issues continue; Reliance asks for 70% revenue share in Week 1 from single screens; Monday business of Spider-Man and Pushpa weakens their bargaining power

21 Dec 2021

The press show of was held yesterday and it met with a roaring response. The verdict by the press has made it clear that the film is sure to find acceptance among audiences. Sadly, the screen sharing issues have still not been resolved, making many in the industry fear that this fine piece of cinema might suffer due to a faulty distribution strategy. For those who are not aware of the issue, heres a lowdown. Reliance Entertainment, which is distributing , has asked exhibitors that only their film should be played in cinema halls for the next two weeks, that is, till January 6, 2022. If exhibitors will agree to this demand, theyll have to discontinue playing last weeks Spider-Man: No Way Homeand Pushpa: The Rise Part 01, both of which are doing fabulous business. Not just that, they also wont be able to play Jersey, which releases on December 31. The Shahid Kapoor-starrer is being distributed by PEN Marudhar and they are also releasing the much-awaited RRR, which hits cinemas on January 7. The fear is that if Jersey is not screened, the exhibitor might also miss out on RRR. As a result, an exhibitor who will risk playing will have to sacrifice Spider-Man: No Way Home and Pushpa: The Rise Part 01 from week 2 and Jersey and RRR from day 1.As a result, the exhibitors are willing to instead sacrifice.A source told Bollywood Hungama, The Monday collections of both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Pushpa: The Rise Part 01 are excellent and proves that the film will have long legs and that itll also sustain well in the second week. So many exhibitors are ready to not play as it will not affect their ticket sales. As per the source, the revenue sharing term and the Sooryavanshi factor has also gone against Reliance. The source explained, The single screens have been asked to pay 70% of revenue for.Its way higher as compared to the terms of the other films. Also, Reliance had rubbed the exhibitors the wrong way during Sooryavanshis release on Diwali. Then, many were compelled to play not even one show of Marvels biggie, Eternals. During that time, Reliance had an upper hand as exhibitors were dying to show Sooryavanshi. In the case of , the exhibitors have several options. On top of that, with such terms, the cinema owners are in no mood to bow down. Not to forget, PEN Marudhar is going to release Jersey, RRR, Attack, Gangubai Kathiawadi etc. Pushpa: The Rise Part 01 is being distributed by AA Films and they, too, have several films coming up, starting with Radhe Shyam in January. Why should we get into their bad books just for one film and thus risk getting such potential grossers from them in the near future? The multiplexes, however, will be releasing with 55% revenue sharing in the first week. As a result, several multiplexes have already begun the advance booking of since Sunday. The source revealed at this point, The advance ticket sales of till now have been decent but not record-breaking, as it happened during Sooryavanshi. This factor has further made Reliances case weak.As of now, hasnt been able to get sufficient single screens. A little more than 50 single screens have been booked for till now across the country. Its woefully inadequate and its important it gets many other single screen theatres to play their film. When contacted, Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, said, Because of the outstanding performance of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Pushpa: The Rise Part 01, I am in a fix (over releasing ). All my five shows, playing the two films, are running to packed houses, even on weekdays. An industry insider, meanwhile, told Bollywood Hungama, The exhibitors have an upper hand this time. Reliance will have to agree to share shows with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Pushpa: The Rise Part 01 in Week 1 and Jersey on December 31. Theres no other option. I am sure the issue will be resolved by Thursday evening and the film will be released widely. is said to be a mind-blowing film and deserves to be played in all parts of the country in sufficient numbers of shows.Meanwhile, Warner Bros The Matrix Resurrections, which releases tomorrow, on Wednesday, December 22, is also facing issues in getting screens. The

Advance booking for Sooryavanshi and Eternals yet to open in multiplex chains due to revenue sharing and show-sharing issues

1 Nov 2021

The much awaited film, Sooryavanshi, is all set to release in four days, on November 5. The excitement is sky-high but surprisingly, the advance booking hasnt opened yet in many cinemas and especially in the national multiplex chains like Inox, PVR and Cinepolis. This is because the cinemas and the producers of the film are in negotiations over two aspects.A source told Bollywood Hungama, Before the pandemic, the revenue sharing model was fixed since 2009 and the film industry was following it to the T. But post pandemic, the producers have been asking for a larger share. Sooryavanshis producers have asked for 60% revenue in Week 1, 55% in Week 2 and 50% in Week 3 and 4, from single screens, standalone multiplexes and non-national multiplexes. As for the national chains, the negotiations are going on and its expected to not be as high as 60% in the first week. Both parties are expected to reach an agreement by today (Monday) evening or latest by Tuesday afternoon. The source added, The single screens and standalone multiplexes have requested that they want the same terms of revenue sharing as the national multiplexes. A solution will be reached on this front soon. Those theatres which have 2k format can at least make it clear that in the absence of reasonable revenue sharing for Sooryavanshi, theyll go ahead and give all their shows to Disneys Eternals, which is also releasing on November 5. However, the non-2k theatres wont have this choice as Hollywood films are not allowed to be released in such cinemas. Hence, they have no choice but to screen Sooryavanshi and are hoping that a solution is reached soon. The source continued, Disney has asked for 50% revenue sharing in Week 1, 48% in Week 2, 45% in Week 3 and 40% in Week 4 in the case of Eternals. And as is the norm now, the cinema halls would also be expected to shell out 30% of the 3D premium with the studio. The other aspect where theres no clear consensus is over screen sharing. The source revealed, We have heard that Reliance has said that they want maximum shows of Sooryavanshi in multiplexes and nearly 100% of shows in theatres with 3 or less than 3 screens. This means that smaller theatres are not being allowed to show Eternals. Disney, on the other hand, has demanded at least some showcasing for their film in these theatres. It is going all out in making it clear to the exhibitors that Eternals is a big film and deserves to be played. The source remarked, It is for the first time probably that we are seeing Disney go all out in ensuring that its film gets a good number of shows in cinemas. The success of the previous Marvel film, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, must have motivated them to do so. Also, they see immense potential in the Indian market and feel Eternals can be a good way to accelerate their road to the expansion of business in the country. The trade source added, Disney and Fox have an enviable slate in 2022. Hence, the exhibitors are wary of getting into their bad books. In the midst, the exhibitors are suffering. An exhibitor sighed, Instead of these studios sitting across the table and solving the issue, they prefer to arm-twist us. We dont want to hurt either Reliance or Disney and want to provide a reasonable number of shows to Sooryavanshi as well as Eternals. We are just waiting and hoping a consensus is met and also that revenue sharing is reasonable. The exhibitor also asked, We never thought this problem would arise in the case of Sooryavanshi and Eternals. I now wonder what will happen in the week when Antim and Satyameva Jayate 2 would clash. And there are many more clashes taking place in the future. However, an industry insider assured that all will be well, Itll be a Happy Diwali for producers and exhibitors. This is not the first such instance and we are sure all the parties concerned would reach an agreement soon. These studios understand the plight and require theatres and the theatres also want these films to release so that they earn to their hearts content, which they havent been able to since March 2020. Just give it some time and things will be fine.

Wonder Woman 1984 to get widest screen count of the season; makers skip 3D release; get higher share from multiplexes

18 Dec 2020

2020 has been a bad year for the box office in India. But if all goes well, itll end on a high, courtesy Wonder Woman 1984. The Gal Gadot starrer will have paid previews from December 23, 5:00 pm onwards, and will have a full release from December 24. And unlike Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari where the studio took a while in reaching a consensus with the multiplexes over revenue sharing, in the case of Wonder Woman 1984, the terms have been amicably accepted by both the parties.A source says, The exact details have been kept confidential by both the parties. However, Warner Bros India had also released Tenet earlier this month. For that film, they settled for a lesser share in the first week than Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari since it was a bit of an old film. However, they had managed to get a higher share for themselves in Week 2 and Week 3 than normal. In case of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros has managed to get a slightly higher share than what they got in Tenet. Not just that, they have also managed to secure more in Week 4 this time, too.The source adds, Some single screen exhibitors had asked for a flat 50% share throughout the films run. Warner, however, has disagreed with this idea. Nevertheless, the film will have a wider release. Both Tenet and Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari released in around 700-750 screens and Wonder Woman 1984s screen count will go higher. The theatres which havent opened since March due to a dearth of exciting content will finally resume operations thanks to this flick. Hence, a 1000-screen release cannot be ruled out.Meanwhile, fans that were hoping to catch this action extravaganza in 3D might be disappointed. The source reveals, Warner Bros has had a disagreement with prominent multiplex chains like PVR, Inox, Cinepolis etc. Warner wants a share of Rs. 30 which is charged for 3D glasses by the multiplexes. But the theatres have refused to do so since they argue that that they have invested in 3D technology and equipment and hence they deserve to keep the full amount. This problem has been going on since 2 years and hence, Warner Bros films like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), Aquaman (2018), Shazam (2019), Pokemon Detective Pikachu (2019), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) etc which were available in 3D globally released only in 2D in India. Wonder Woman 1984 would be no exception. However, this is not the only reason. The source continues, 3D glasses in these pandemic times can be risky. Though theatres have assured that theyll use disposable glasses, one cant be sure. In fact, even the multiplexes have agreed that a 3D release should be avoided as of now. Fans, however, can enjoy an enhanced experience of the film in IMAX and 4D screens. Before signing off, the source says, The trade and industry are confident that Wonder Woman 1984 will be well received. After all, the international reviews have been very encouraging. As several critics are still afraid to visit cinemas, the makers have decided to not hold a press show here. Nevertheless, the series and the lead actress has a massive fan following and audiences are sure to visit in big numbers from day 1. Also, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not even played spoilsport this time! The film was passed on December 7 with a U/A certification and zero cuts. The films final length is 151 minutes.A trade expert says, If Tenet, despite being confusing and having a niche appeal, is expected to collect around Rs. 10-11 crore in its lifetime, then Wonder Woman 1984 has the potential to earn three times more. Not just Bollywood, but even regional industries are keen to see how it performs at the box office. Its healthy performance at the ticket window would inspire many other filmmakers to release their films January 2021 onwards.
