"Film has triggered something deeper", Nandita Das writes in gratitude note for 'Zwigato'

20 Mar 2023

View this post on InstagramA post shared by Nandita Das (@nanditadasofficial)As the film has opened up the space for converstions, Nandita felt that the film has 'triggered something deeper.' She wrote, "But what was moving was to hear the reflective responses - a 12-year-old's poignant questions; an 80-year-old who felt it is never too late to change; conversations lingering, even after the lights came on in theatres...and more. So many shared that they had begun tipping and rating far more generously than they ever did. It's clear that the film has triggered something deeper."She continued, "Slowly it is going beyond the excitement of Kapil's new avatar, the intriguing combination of him and me - two people from seemingly different worlds, Shahana's brilliant performance, Applause's first film release or my third directorial venture. While all of these are causes for much celebration, what stands out is the immersive experience that is making people dive inwards and their need to share it generously. As long as I see this gentle stir, I am happy. A big thank you..."The film is about the struggles of a food-delivery boy and his family. Asked about choosing such subject matter, Nandita said, "I like this kind of subject. Because nowadays we see less of the common man's story in movies."Asked about Kapil's selection for the role, Nandita said to ANI, "I had not seen Kapil Sharma's show, so I did not know much about him. But one day my eyes fell on a video of Kapil which was from an award show. When I saw that clip, I felt like aam aadmi ki tarah hai. His languages and gestures speak of a common man's mannerisms."

"It's story of aam insaan, that's why Kapil Sharma is in the movie," says filmmaker Nandita Das on 'Zwigato'

common man's mannerisms."Initially, Nandita thought of this as a twenty-minute short film. Later it was decided to be made into a feature film for its compelling subject matter. The film is about the struggles of a food-delivery boy and his family. Asked about choosing such subject matter, Nandita said, "I like this kind of subject. Because nowadays we see less of the common man's story in movies."Nandita has also addressed the issue of casting Shah Rukh Khan in the movie. It was said, that even if Shah Rukh said 'yes' to this movie, Nandita would have cast Kapil only. Rejecting such speculations, Nandita said, "The story of my film is the story of Aam Insaan, so Kapil Sharma is cast in this film. It's not a story of a big star."The film had screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala.Shahana Goswami played a pivotal role in the movie.

Kapil Sharma returns to acting, to star alongside Shahana Goswami in Nandita Das upcoming film

17 Feb 2022

Writer-director-producer Nandita Das teams up with Kapil Sharma, featured in a never-seen-before avatar, as he steps into the shoes of a food delivery rider. Kapil will be joined by Shahana Goswami, who plays his wife. The film is being produced by Applause Entertainment and Nandita Das Initiatives. The film, slated to begin filming later this month, is set in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.Says Nandita Das, The film attempts to make visible what's hidden in plain sight. And for this, the cast and crew have serendipitously come together. One day, Kapil Sharma popped up on my screen! I hadnt seen his show, but I could see him wholly representing the 'common man', despite not being one anymore! I am certain he will surprise everyone, including himself, with his natural candidness. I am looking forward to working again with Shahana, an amazing actor and person. And in Sameer (Nair), I have found a true producing partner."Sameer Nair, CEO of Applause Entertainment, says Nandita first narrated this idea to us as a short. We loved it so much that we actively encouraged her to expand it into a full feature. And we are elated to say that the idea is blossoming into a wonderful film that captures the lives of the invisible, ordinary people who actually keep this country and our economy running. When we see our protagonist struggling in an indifferent digital order, what we witness is man versus machine, but with an immensely humane perspective. We are mighty excited to see Kapil and Shahana in an entirely new light under Nanditas able direction. ???? Your Order is Placed ???? ???? Applause Entertainment & Nandita Das Initiatives are thrilled to present the most exciting collaboration of the year. Says Kapil Sharma, I am very excited about this project, not because I am doing a film, but because I am doing Nandita Das film, whom I have seen both as an actor and a director. She has a very distinct and deep way of looking at things and a keen eye for detailing. So my job as an actor is to just do what she tells me. Her work is very different from mine, and I am happy that the audience will get to see a new side of me. An artist is always thirsty to do something different! The people behind the project, Nandita Das and Sameer Nair are both extremely passionate and good at what they make, so I am really excited to be doing this film.Shahana Goswami said After Firaaq, I couldn't be happier to finally be on an adventure with Nandita again. I'm excited to work with Kapil as I know he will bring a certain naturalness and ease to this character. I'm thankful to Applause for supporting and nurturing Nandita's vision and grateful to them for making me a part of this journey. I'm looking forward to this wonderful creative collaboration with so many extremely talented people in the crew, with my dear Nandita as our captain and guide.

Tisca Chopra supports United Nations Right To Life, says in India rights of women are trampled upon

2 Feb 2021

Tisca Chopra today joined actors and filmmakers including Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Raveena Tandon, R Balki, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Imtiaz Ali, Nandita Das and many more, each taking a stand for the human right they feel is most important. On a podcast, Tisca chose to talk about the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights Right to Life. Tisca Chopra said, In India the rights of women are so badly trampled upon, taking away the right to, not just life, but life with dignity. It's not just that you exist, but it's the quality of that existence. I think we need to address this issue with education and I feel the right to dignity should be taught to children at junior school or even middle school. It should be spoken about frequently, called into parent-teacher meetings, once the pandemic is over, obviously, but these are things that should be discussed openly and widely.Discussing her experience of the right to dignity in the film fraternity, Tisca said, When I came to Bombay I felt the film industry was very misogynistic - women were second-grade citizens seen through the male gaze as objects. When I started writing and producing, the first film I made, Chutney, was very rebellious because I felt the earning capacity of an actress being sexually attractive was said to be the only chip that she was bargaining with. I, as an act of rebellion, chose to make the protagonist in Chutney almost borderline ugly. She speaks badly. She doesn't have an education. She doesnt have a child to give her any status in society.""The fact that it became the most-watched short film in the world with 132 million views proved that what weve been telling people - that girls need to be all about the body and the way they look, is taking away the dignity of an artist. Saying theres nothing else to you other than the fact you could be the object of someone's sexual interest is extremely degrading," she added."One thing that is wonderful, post the #MeToo movement, is every single production office that one goes to has the POSH guidelines laid out Prevention of Sexual Harassment, bold and clear. And that's to me, a huge, huge relief, because starting out the film industry was a despicable place for women to work in, in every way. Physical dignity, personal dignity, harassment of all sorts. So, these are areas where I feel the work that people like you (United for Human Rights) and the United Nations have been doing in education has come such a long way, because it's acting as a massive deterrent and things are so much better on set now," she further said."There is a lot of work still to be done in the areas of bringing women up as artists, as free voices speaking for themselves. And that's the area I want to work in, because I don't believe in getting angry. I believe in getting better and having more power to be able to assert myself and say - these are the kind of stories I want to tell. And to do it so well that they sell. So that you buy your freedom by creating the kind of work, which stands head and shoulders above the rest of the work, or at least at par. So then gender ceases to be a thing," she concludes.

Sonu Sood calls for human rights education program about government food schemes

9 Oct 2020

Sonu Sood today joins actors and filmmakers including Sonakshi Sinha, Raveena Tandon, R. Balki, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Imtiaz Ali, Nandita Das, Saket Chaudhary, Alankrita Shrivastava, Ruchi Nair, and Shonali Bose, each taking a stand for the human right they feel is most important. On the Born Free & Equal podcast by United for Human Rights, where Sonu chose to talk about the human right Food and Shelter for All, he said, Food and Shelter is the right that everyone needs and deserves to get. Imagine all these poor guys who are on the roads - they're not getting food with them for two days, three days. What we realized is that government distributed food reaches a lot of places, but we also had at least 30 to 40% of people who still get deprived of all their needs and their rights, so the question is how to make that awareness? Yes, the law and rights to food and shelter exist, but how many people are really enjoying it in the heartland, theres a lot of classism, there are a lot of people not aware of their rights and, like what this Born Free and Equal podcast is doing, its just about bringing that awareness - awareness of your rights. Half of the people, I would say five out of 10 people, they are not aware, or if they are aware, they don't know how to make use of their rights. So, I think that that's a little bit of a knowledge that needs to be given to these guys.Sonu was joined on the podcast by actress Sheena Chohan, South Asia Ambassador for United for Human Rights, who was awarded the Hero Award at the United Nations in New York last year. Sheena said. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Indian Constitution make it clear that people have a right to these basic rights. Article 47 of our Constitution says raising the level of nutrition, standard of living and health is among the states most important duties. So, its wonderful to have someone like Sonu, who has done so much to provide for those without food and shelter in this crisis, call for education programs which would permanently see that awareness of the food schemes provided by the government to comply with the constitution, reach everyone who needs it.

Raveena Tandon comes forward to support UN Human Right, A Fair and Free World

31 Aug 2020

Face for social change for the longest time, Raveena Tandon has now joined the likes of Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, R Balki, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Imtiaz Ali, Nandita Das and many more to show support to the human right she feels is most important. Present on the Born Free & Equal podcast by United for Human Rights, Raveena chose to talk about the human right 'A Fair and Free World'. Opening up about the same, the diva highlights why it's important for people to be aware of their rights, in order to not get exploited. While talking about the right, Raveena Tandon was also joined by actress Sheena Chohan, South Asia Ambassador for United for Human Rights. The actress said, “It is very, very important for us to see that all these people that are spread far and wide in this country are reached out to, to make them aware of their rights. Unfortunately, half of these people are not even aware that they have the rights our constitution states. People in different parts of the country don't attempt to chase their dreams or do things they really want to do, because of illiteracy and unawareness - because there's no outreach. The constitution, I believe, should be simplified. Basic rights need to be also taught to our children. I think it should be made mandatory. We all learn Civics and History, but I think it should be a part of the module for children to learn the basic, Civic Rights.”Mentioning why it's really necessary for our government to spread awareness education today, Raveena Tandon further adds, "It's necessary to take the awareness into the country, into our interiors, where people are living completely unaware. Because being unaware of their rights, they are taken an unfair advantage of - it could be labour rights, it could be child labour, it could be, exploitation of the very basic, simple rights to life. Once you have that education - the proper resources, where you need to go, what you need to do, how you need to fight for your rights, then people become harder to take advantage of because they are aware.”The Born Free & Equal podcast consists of well-known artists giving motivational stories about their struggles & successes to do with the human right they feel is most important as well as their ideas concerning bringing it to life. Distributed by HubHopper, the podcast provides information about the right from both the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Indian Constitution.
