Vivek Agnihotri compares making The Kashmir Files to filming Schindlers List: Imagine making it when Hitler was ruling; Now terrorism is ruling

23 Jun 2022

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri continues to stay in the headlines ever since his blockbuster The Kashmir Files soared at the box office. The filmmaker has maintained that he directed the film in order to bring the issues of Kashmiri Pandits to the spotlight. In a recent interview with a foreign publication, the filmmaker compared making the movie with that of 1993 Steven Spielberg's directorial, Schindlers List.Vivek Agnihotri compares making The Kashmir Files to filming Schindlers List: Imagine making it when Hitler was ruling; Now terrorism is rulingIn the interview, Agnihotri continued to deny the claims that the film had the government of India's support and that the film has encouraged people to vilify Muslims. It was impossible to make a film about the Kashmiri Hindu genocide, he told New Yorker. The reason was terrorism; everybody was scared. But then we decided to do it. People came to my office and hit my manager. I was heckled. So now the government of India has given me security. And this is exactly why people do not make movies on the Kashmiri Hindu genocide, because it is assumed that, if Hindus are in the majority in India, then theyre powerful everywhere, but this is wrong. When Schindlers List was made, the whole world appreciated it and people said, Yes, you brought the truth out. But imagine making Schindlers List when the Nazis were ruling. Imagine making it when Hitler was ruling. Now terrorism is ruling.Furthermore, when asked whether he was comparing the current plight of India with Schindler's List because terrorists rule in India, he said, Oh, of course. I dont think there is any human being whos going to appreciate the terrorist activities. Our film is very clearly about what happens when terrorism seeps in and when humanity is absent. And, therefore, the impact of the movie as desired by me as a filmmaker is exactly what is happening. People are crying, theyre hugging each other, theyre saying, We are sorry. And the whole entire India is coming together. And thats why there is so much euphoria. He maintained that The Kashmir Files is a soft emotional film. Its an emotional film. Its got a more feature-film format rather than a harsh statement, he said. The Kashmir Files starred Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, and Mithun Chakraborty.

Steven Spielberg had introduced Aamir Khan to Tom Hanks as James Cameron of India; Tom revealed that he has seen 3 Idiots as many as 3 times!

29 May 2022

Aamir Khan is known for entertaining as well as making thought-provoking cinema. Not just in India, but his films are enjoyed by moviegoers across the world. Its common knowledge that Aamir Khan is a superstar in China and that his films like Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017) have done blockbuster business in the neighbouring country. Dangal, in fact, collected Rs. 1000 crore plus at the Chinese box office. However, even in the West, Aamir Khan has carved a niche. And Hollywood stars too enjoy his films.Steven Spielberg had introduced Aamir Khan to Tom Hanks as James Cameron of India; Tom revealed that he has seen 3 Idiots as many as 3 times! It has recently come to light that Tom Hanks is an admirer of Aamir Khan as well. Aamir Khan happened to meet him somewhere in 2014 or 2015 when he flew down to Germany to have a meeting with acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg. It so happened that Aamir Khan wished to remake Forrest Gump (1994) whose rights rested with its director Robert Zemeckis. Robert, however, refused to meet Aamir. Aamir tried a lot to set up the meeting but in vain.Left with no choice, he decided to meet Steven Spielberg, who was then shooting for his film Bridge Of Spies (2015). Interestingly, the film starred Tom Hanks, who also starred in Forrest Gump and whose role Aamir wanted to essay in the remake. Robert Zemeckis held Spielberg in high regard. As a result, Aamir felt that if Steven Spielberg would convince Robert, the latter would part with the remake rights of Forrest Gump.Aamir Khan reached the sets of Bridge Of Spies and met Steven Spielberg along with Tom Hanks. Steven Spielberg introduced Aamir to Tom Hanks as James Cameron of India. This is because according to the filmmaker, just like how James Cameron breaks his own box office records, so does Aamir! Tom Hanks, however, made it clear that he knows Aamir very well. He also admitted that he loved Aamirs 2009 film 3 Idiots and that he has seen it as many as 3 times!Aamir Khan then told Steven Spielberg about his predicament about Robert Zemeckis. To which Spielberg told Aamir that his relationship with Zemeckis was like that of a father and a son. And like most fathers and sons, they dont always get along well! He also revealed to Aamir that Robert Zemeckis was refusing to meet the superstar as he didnt want to say no to Aamirs face.Nevertheless, Aamir Khan kept on trying. At last, he won the remake rights. The remake of Forrest Gump came to be known as Laal Singh Chaddha. It is all set to release on August 11, 2022, and is one of the most awaited films of the year.

Steven Spielberg to develop new movie about Steve McQueens Bullitt character

26 Feb 2022

American film director-producer Steven Spielberg is all ready to develop a new film centered on the character Frank Bullitt, as originated by Steve McQueen in 1968's Bullitt. On Friday, Warner Bros. and Amblin confirmed the news.According to the Entertainment Weekly, the film is still in development, with no deals done as of yet. The new movie will not be remake rather an entirely new story built around the Bullitt character. The original Bullitt was produced by McQueen's production company, Solar Productions, and released by Warner Bros, who still hold the rights, and will be the home studio for this new project. In Bullitt, McQueen starred as the title character, Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco cop on the hunt for a mob boss who orchestrated a hit on Bullitt's key witness in a case against organized crime.Directed by Peter Yates, whose credits include Breaking Away, the film is best known for its iconic climactic car chase through the streets of San Francisco, often held up as one of the best chase scenes in cinema history alongside The French Connection. Many questions, including who could fill McQueen's shoes and whether the film will be set in the 1960s, are yet to be answered. Amblin says it will definitely not be Spielberg's next film, as he's currently in post-production on The Fablemans, a semi-autobiographical project loosely based on his childhood growing up in Arizona.Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce alongside Spielberg, with Josh Singer attached to write. Steve McQueen's son, Chad, and granddaughter, Molly, are also on board to executive produce.

Steven Spielbergs West Side Story banned in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar due to portrayal of transgender character

7 Dec 2021

Disney and 20th Centurys West Side Story, director Steven Spielbergs adaptation of the classic musical, has been banned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait.According to Variety, in some cases, like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the film wasnt granted a release certificate. In other countries, such as Qatar and Oman, Disney refused to comply with cuts requested by censors. The move isnt entirely surprising because Middle Eastern countries have strict censorship mandates regarding sexuality, swearing, and other aspects that dont comply with the nations cultural views.West Side Story isnt profane, but its understood that censors werent on board with Anybodys, a character who is transgender and portrayed by non-binary actor Iris Menas. Films with LGBTQ references have been regularly targeted by censors in the Middle East, as well as China. Most recently, Disneys comic book epic Eternals was pulled from release across the same region due to the inclusion of Marvels first openly same-sex couple. In the movie, Brian Tyree Henrys otherworldly character Phastos shares a kiss with his mortal husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman). The new version comes 60 years after the original movie (itself adapted from the 1957 Broadway show) and features Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort as star-crossed lovers. Their new romance fuels the rivalry between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The cast also includes Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Mike Faist as Riff, and Rita Moreno (who won an Oscar for portraying Anita in the 1961 adaptation) as Valentina.West Side Story will release in theaters on Friday, December 10.

Shabana Azmi on staying safe & sane during Covid

8 May 2021

The mighty Shabana Azmi shot an entire web series for Steven Spielberg in Budapest and a feature film for Shekhar Kapoor in London during the Covid crisis. But now all shooting has come to a grinding halt. The formidable actress is now at her farmhouse on the outskirts of Mumbai with her husband and some close members of her family. Her farmhouse is named Sukoon. Bu there is no sukoon (peace) in her mind right now. Every day we are losing a relative or a friend. Jadu (husband Javed Akhtar) lost two cousins on the same day. Before we can mourn the passing of one loved one, another one goes. Im numbed with grief and disbelief.Shabana is in quarantine with family. At Sukoon we step out only into the garden. Otherwise we are completely indoors. The family is here with us, and thats most comforting at a time like this. We do not leave the house. Grocery is brought to the house. We have created our own bubble over here in Sukoon, a lesson I learnt from my shootings abroad after the pandemic broke out.I ask her about the work she is known to with the needy. I am monitoring the work at Mijwan (her ancestral home town in Uttar Pradesh) for Covid relief, including providing oxygen concentrators on a daily basis. But these are not things one should be talking about. Right now its time for action, not self-congratulation.
