Juhi Chawla celebrates 30 years of 'Darr', recalls shooting with SRK, Sunny Deol

24 Dec 2023

'Darr' won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. As the film completed three decades today, Juhi took a stroll down memory lane and recalled working with SRK and Sunny."Darr is one of the highlights of my career. One of the most important films I have done. Before Darr, I worked with Yash Chopra ji in Chandni and it was just a tiny bit. At that time, I was very new but still he cast me opposite Vinod Khanna ji and I had that little guest appearance. That was the first time I faced the camera with Yash ji directing me, which was just two and half days of work," she said.Juhi added, "After that I worked in Pam Chopra ji's production which was also a YRF film - Aaina. And I have said this before, Aaina was the first time where I was called to Honey ji's house, who sat me down and went through the entire script with me. The second time that I ever heard a script again was when Yash ji sat me down in the Gadda room at their home. I was just amazed as I was an upcoming artist, who was still finding her feet and here was this great director whose movies I had watched as a child, and then when I became an actress, I was sitting in front of him, while he nicely took me through the whole film."She said it was a big moment for her to be called Yash Chopra's heroine."Also, at that time, it was very rare that the Directors or Producers wrote their whole script before going into shooting. However, with Yash ji, both the films that I did whether it was Aaina or Darr they narrated the whole script to me! It was wonderful. I do have wonderful memories of working with Yash ji. I was very young at that time and was in awe of Yash ji. It was such a big moment for me to be a Yash Chopra ji's heroine, and that I would be directed by him. I had grown up watching Silsila, and some other movie but I never imagined that I would be in front of the camera and that the legendary Yash Chopra would be directing me," Juhi said. She recalled that she was thrilled to hear that Shah Rukh would be playing the anti-hero in Darr."When I heard that Yash ji was going to cast Aamir for the role that Shah Rukh did, I was so happy, because you know I've worked with Aamir in our initial films and with him I'm so comfortable. Then I heard that Aamir is not doing it, then I think it went to Ajay Devgn and some other young heroes but they wouldn't do it, then finally it was Shah Rukh. But I can't tell you how special it was! At that time, I was this wide eyed young girl who was going through life and going through the whole experience... I didn't know what I was really doing or where I was heading. Just experiencing these big highs and being overwhelmed with it, also being nervous but then also finding my little joys with SRK - because I had done Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman with him by then, so at least there was that comfort level. It was a great big adventure," she shared.

He wrote, "In a few hours #tumkyamile will be yours....I remember at the very onset my instinct was that I wanted to film a love song that would unabashadely pay homage to my guru Yash Chopra.... The thinking evolved mind would say "you can't match it or even dare to emulate it " but the fan boy and the ardent lover of snow , chiffons, the stunning locations of Kashmir and sheer romance got the better of me...Pritam Dada and I yearned for a song for the ages from the ages and it had it be unapologetic or it wouldn't be true ..."The director further shared, "My deepest gratitude to Vaibhavi Merchant who got the Memo better than I did and completely took charge and being a Yash Chopra lover herself ... she gave her heart to our song...This is also the first shoot Alia did after the birth of her angel and I remain in apology for freezing her in Manish Malhotra chiffons ... in sympathy I fell drastically ill through the shoot ( a karmic punishment perhaps..Ranveer was nervous as this was his first lip sync mountain love song but he was a real trooper...."Recalling his uncle, he added, "So we are back to the valleys for a ishq wala lip sync chiffon saree song...I hope you feel the love as much as we felt the cold...This one's for you Yash uncle ...Your fan forever ,Karan."View this post on InstagramA post shared by Karan Johar (@karanjohar)'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' marks Karan Johar's return to the director's chair after over six years. The film will hit the theatres on July 28.

"I was actually relaunched by Yash Chopra": Divya Dutta reminisces 'Veer Zaara' days

17 May 2023

Divya Dutta has impressed audiences with her impactful performances in films like 'Veer Zaara', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', 'Heroine' and many more.Recently the actor opened up about how she used to daydream of working with the legendary director Yash Chopra.Talking exclusively to ANI, Divya Dutta said, "My dream was to be launched by Yash Chopra. I used to daydream and sit in a corner and always announce 'so the best actor award goes to Divya Dutta and launched by Yash Chopra,' this was my patent daydreaming and I think when you really want something the universe conspires."Helmed by Yash Chopra 'Veer Zaara' starred Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. In the film, Divya portrayed the role of Shabbo, who was Zaara's friend played by Preity Zinta."Everything cut to the premiere of the film I was very nervous holding my mother's hand tight and during the interval, I was like ab ban gayi mai best friend (now I became a best friend) and then for the first time in my life after I was in the industry for five or six years I was hugged and everyone was asking Yash uncle, 'from where you brought this girl. Is she from Pakistan, is she new?' and I felt in such an unassuming way that way I was actually relaunched by Yash Chopra," Divya said.Divya debuted in the film industry with the movie 'Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna' in 1994.She also talked about how she once decided to pack her bags and leave Mumbai during her initial days in the film industry.Divya told ANI, "I think it wasn't easy to fit in. I even thought of just packing my bags and going back to my home and I just looked up at one of Sai Baba's pictures and I said, 'Today is my last day in Mumbai, get me some work otherwise I am leaving. Then I will understand you (God) don't want me here.' Then you can call it a miracle or coincidence, the next day I got a call from Pamela Rooks for 'Train to Pakistan'."Talking about the film she said, "Train to Pakistan of course at that time was a parallel cinema. And I found my niche that side where I fit in and where I did what I wanted to do. I got that creative satisfaction when I started working in 'Train to Pakistan'. After that I got 'Shaheed E Mohabbat,' then I did a Shyam Benegal film and then things happened.""'Train to Pakistan' I got because Pamela wanted me in it. She didn't like my glamourous pictures and threw them and then she said "but I like you," she took a long dramatic pause and said I want a child woman in my film and you're a child woman. So she got it right and I really enjoyed doing that film," said Divya.Later she appeared in several hit films like 'Badlapur', 'Delhi-6', 'Stanley Ka Dabba', and 'Heroine', among others.

"When I got a call for 'Veer Zara', I was excited that now I am going to be launched properly," says Divya Dutta

17 May 2023

Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta-starrer 'Veer-Zaara', directed by Yash Chopra, released in 2004? Divya Dutta, who played the role and made it memorable, recalled how she got so much love and recognition with the movie. She also added that initially, she was hesitant to take up the project but it was because of her mother that she accepted the opportunity. During an exclusive interview with ANI, Divya said, "I wanted to become an actor since I was four and had seen Mr Bachchan (megastar Amitabh Bachchan) on the big screen I knew this is where I wanted to belong and I used to daydream about being awarded the best actor award in a movie directed by Yash Chopra. When I came to the industry I was lost in the multistarrer films where I was one of the heroines opposite big stars and had like those few scenes and two romantic songs and I was like I didn't come for this."She continued, "When I got a call for 'Veer Zara', I was very excited that now I am going to be launched properly, and they called me and said this is the story, and I was totally besotted, and they told me that there is Shahrukh, there is Rani, there is Preity, there is Mr Bachchan, and there is Hema Ji, and I was like, 'What am I doing in the film?' and I was told that you are doing a friend's role. If I am introduced as a friend to a heroine, then at that time there is a thappa(taboo). At that time it was still there, but less so, so I said I don't want to be stamped now."Divya said that although she was hesitant, her mother motivated her to join the film's cast and do the role."My mother asked me, "Do you have a godfather?" or if I am going to produce something for you, and I said no, so she said, 'Then go ahead and take a role that is so beautiful, make it your own, do it so well that people write roles for you, and hence happened 'Veer Zaara' for me. And in fact, Aditya had told me if there was any other role, I wouldn't have called you, so trust me, the way he said that stayed with me, and everything that could be done for 'Veer Zaara', right from the dialect, listening to somebody in Lahore on the phone and picking up that dialect, picking up that body language, and just wanted that X factor," Divya told ANI.Moving ahead in the conversation she talked about how being a Punjabi helped her in getting the dialect right in the film."When I was in Punjab I spoke less Punjabi. I spoke more here in Mumbai than at that time. Still, it was my language that helped but the dialect was very different. Everything cut to the premiere of the film I was very nervous holding my mother's hand tight and during the interval, I was like ab ban gayi mai best friend(now I became best friend) and then for the first time in my life after I was in the industry for five or six years I was hugged everyone was asking Yash uncle ye kudi kithe leke aaye ho Pakistan te aayi hai nayi hai(Everyone asked Yash uncle from where you brought this girl. Is she from Pakistan, is she new) and I felt in such an unassuming way that way I was actually relaunched by Yash Chopra"Divya debuted in the film industry with the movie 'Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna' in 1994. Later, she also acted in 'Veer-Zaara', 'Welcome to Sajjanpur', 'Delhi-6', 'Stanley Ka Dabba', 'Heroine', 'Bhaag Milkha Singh', among others. She did many supporting roles and was praised for that but the actress never like to categorise herself in any category of 'supporting' or 'character' roles. As she told ANI, "Had I come in today's times like the current scenario of OTT and everything, there wouldn't be a supporting actor because I see so many of my juniors and peers doing roles just because they like them; they are significant and beautiful, not necessarily the lead ones, but unfortunately, I came a little earlier where the times when there were the hero, the heroine, the comedian, the villain, and baki jo hai vo supporting hai to logon ko us waqt mujhe categorise karna nahi aaya(rest all were supporting roles. People didn't understand how to categorise me). I was doing a Rituparno Ghosh film, a Shyam Benegal film, a Rakesh Mehra film, and a Yash Chopra film. No one in my peer group was doing that. Still, no one knew isko kaise kahe(no one knew how to say this), so I think the very convenient thing to brand somebody as a heroine nahi hai na to isko supporting bol do(if she is not a heroine call her supporting actress), so I always fought that battle. Don't call me either a supporting or character actor. I think I am an actor today. I am doing a lot of lead roles. Strangely, I am working in reverse ways, but that doesn't make me a lead actor. This was my passion and I always wanted to do this only and get appreciated for that."

'Mere paas maa hai' to 'ammi jaan kehti thi': Bollywood dialogues that celebrate motherhood

13 May 2023

1. 'Mere paas maa hai'Remember the iconic dialogue from Late Yash Chopra directed 'Deewar'? The conference has mesmerized everyone and people even use it in memes nowadays. This one is still regarded as the most famous dialogue of all maa dialogues. In the scene, Shashi Kapoor being a cop confronts his nefarious brother (Amitabh Bachchan).2. 'Tu abhi itna bhi ameer nahi hua, ki apni maa ko khareed sake'True that! Another dialogue from the same movie by Nirupa Roy. Salim-Javed Akhtar gave so many legendary dialogues that made every scene in this movie irreplaceable. Such scenes prove that a mother's DNA comprises of selfless and unconditionally that no money can buy. This movie was released in January 1975, and stars iconic actors of Bollywood like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy and Parveen Babi.3. 'Ammi jaan kehti thi koi dhanda chota nahi hota'The famous dialogue, 'Ammi jaan kehti thi koi dhanda chota nahi hota' Aur dhande se bada koi dharam nahi hota' from Rahul Dholakia directed 'Raees' by megastar Shahrukh Khan continues to echo amongst us and provide a zeal to do something in life. Mothers are our first teacher and their nurturing shape us into good humans they do have a unique perspective on their children's lives and can often offer valuable insights that can help their children navigate difficult situations. In this sense, they can be an invaluable source of wisdom and guidance.4. 'Bhagwan har jagah nahi hota hai, Isi liye toh usne maa banai hai'The dialogue by Late Sridevi from the movie 'Mom', touches your heart in a different way. This popular sentiment expresses the idea that mothers are an embodiment of God's love and nurturing qualities. It conveys that moms are often seen as protectors, caretakers and the next best one after god, who provides us with a sense of security, comfort and care.5. 'Jab ladki jawan ho jati hai, toh maa uski maa nahi rehti sehali ban jaati hai'Have we all girls not found our true best friend in our moms? Another dialogue by Farida Jalal from 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' is every mother-daughter's true story! The relationship between a mother and daughter can evolve and change over time. As the daughter grows, they may start to develop a sense of independence and maturity, and their relationship with their mom shifts to become more of a friendship. Even after this shift, the mother plays a unique and important role in her daughter's life, offering a source of wisdom, experience, and unconditional love.6. 'Maa ke Dil ko dukha kar aaj tak koi khush nahi raha hai'Another famous dialogue of Shahrukh Khan from the blockbuster movie 'Devdas' is a lesson for everyone that teaches the importance of treating mothers with kindness and respect. It suggests that when someone intentionally or unintentionally hurt their mom, they not only harm the mother, but also potentially damage the relationship between the her and child, and create negative emotions that can linger for years to come. The statement also suggests that, in the end, hurting a mother's heart does not bring anyone happiness. Even if the person who caused the pain initially derives some pleasure or satisfaction from their actions, they will eventually come to realize the true cost of their behaviour and the toll it takes on themselves.7. 'Chot lagto hai to admi maa maa hi chilata hai'Quite relatable! This dialogue from 'Airlift' by Akshay Kumar highlights the need for a mother we all have, especially in times of distress or pain. When someone is hurt or experiencing a difficult situation, they naturally and instinctively call out for their mom, seeking comfort and support from the person with whom they share a strong emotional bond that exists between a mother and her child. This bond is often forged in early childhood and can endure throughout a person's life, providing a sense of security and comfort even in the most difficult of circumstances.

"Was an honour to be a part of Yash Chopra's first venture as a producer": Sharmila Tagore as 'Daag' clocks 50 years

27 Apr 2023

Daag' clocked 50 years on Thursday. The film, starring Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee in the lead roles, is considered one of the most landmark romantic films of Indian cinema.'Daag' marked Yash Chopra's debut as a producer.Talking about her collaboration with the 'Kabhi Kabhie' director, actor Sharmila Tagore said, "I think it's wonderful that it's now 50 years since we made Daag, yet the movie and the songs remain so popular. In fact, recently Manoj Bajpayee (I made Gulmohar with him) was constantly singing Ek Chehre Pe Dusre Chehre Laga Dete Hai Log. I had to tell him please don't sing it. My reaction when I was offered Daag was an unparalleled joy, really. I saw it as a great compliment and honour to be a part of Yash's first venture, his debut as a producer. I was absolutely thrilled."Released in the year 1973, the film was declared a hit.Sharmila added, "Working in Daag was a wonderful experience. Actually working with Yash - even when I worked with him in 'Waqt' was a wonderful experience. He was always so much fun. As a director, he energised everyone on the set. Ask anybody who has worked with him, with his Punjabi endearments and just generally he was like a live wire. We shot in such beautiful locations when we were working for 'Daag'. We were shooting in Shimla one day and I woke up to a landscape covered in snow; a stunning view from my hotel window but that also meant that I had to walk to work as no car could come to us through the snow; I remember that I would get ready in make up-hair and everything and barely walk 5 steps when something had hit me really really hard and it was a snowball."The film also starred actors Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and A.K Hangal in pivotal roles. She added, "I turned around to protest, I found a bunch of giggly girls and they said 'Yeh toh hamara khel hai, hum toh khelenge'. I tried to explain to them but they wouldn't listen (laughs). And I had to walk the distance to the location which was thankfully not too far being constantly hit with snowballs; I think I also threw some at them but my aim was not half as good as theirs! But anyway, I think I quite enjoyed that by the end of it; it's another matter that I had to change at the location because I was drenched; so they made sort of a make-shift room where I changed my sari! Anyway it was a great experience playing their game 'Yeh toh hamara khel hai, hum toh khelenge'."Speaking about her pairing with Rajesh Khanna she said, "I think Kaka gave a memorable performance in Daag and he looked really really gorgeous in his later avatar as Rakhee's husband with that moustache and that dashing look ..so you know he played 2 different stages in his life and he already was the heartthrob of the nation and he was very good. I am really very grateful and happy that the audience liked Kaka and I working together and we became a hit pair and I think we made some great films together - Daag of course being one of them and even today they talk about our pair! I'm very grateful."Yash Chopra is regarded as the 'Father of Romance' in India because of his iconic romantic films like Silsila, Lamhe, Kabhi Kabhie, Veer-Zaara, Dil To Pagal Hai, Chandni, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, etc.

Remembering Sridevi: Powerful performances by the superstar

24 Feb 2023

SadmaThere's hardly any person who has not shed a tear in the last scene of this movie. Remake of a Tamil movie, this film established Sridevi as one of the most powerful actors at the very early stage of her Hindi career.ChandniHer white look in this film set a fashion trend back in the 80s. Helmed by Yash Chopra, this movie is also celebrated for its music.Mr IndiaSridevi was not only a powerful actor, but she was also one of the most successful commercial heroines in the hindi industry. From 'Hawa Hawai' to 'Kaate Nehi Katte', Sridevi showed her range of versatility in this movie.ChaalBaazSridevi played twin characters in this movie, the tamed and submissive Anju and the boisterous and go-getting Manju. Sridevi's comic timing was mostly talked about in this movie.Khuda GawaAmitabh Bachchan, larger-than-life setting and Sridevi! The film was talked about as Amitabh and Sridevi were struggling to deliver hits at the box office back then.LamheTeaming up with her 'Chandni' director Yash Chopra one more time, Sridevi played double roles in this movie. For playing the dual roles of mother and daughter, Sridevi won accolades.English VinglishAfter a 15-year-long hiatus, Sridevi made a pleasant comeback at the movies with Gauri Shinde's directorial debut 'English Vinglish'. The film received a standing ovation at the Toronto International film festival. The present generation is perhaps more acquainted with Sridevi's Sashi than her Chandni. It's difficult to live up to Sridevi's legacy. But she is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic actresses on the silver screen who remained a mystery even in her death.
