Aditya Dhars heartfelt encomium to Ram Gopal Varma calling him a major source of inspiration has left the filmmaker deeply emotional. Dhar had written, I came to Mumbai years ago carrying one suitcase, one dream, and an unreasonable belief that I would one day work under Ram Gopal Varma. That never happened. But somewhere along the way, without knowing it, I worked inside your cinema. Your films didnt teach me how to make movies they taught me how to think dangerously. Ram Gopal Varma gets emotional over Aditya Dhars praise; says, I feel like crying Speaking to this writer, Ram Gopal Varma says, I just spoke to Aditya. We had a long conversation. I feel like crying. When someone like Rajamouli or Aditya tells me that I have inspired them, I feel like that Liril soap ad from the 1970s which made the model Karen Lunel famous. But what about the soap itself? Varma believes that Dhurandhar has fundamentally altered the grammar of Indian filmmaking. Like I said in my tweet, it is a quantum leap for Indian cinema, and we must celebrate its success rather than bitch about its politics. Who cares about its politics as long as it is a work that takes our cinema forward?
Three decades after it first hit theatres, Ram Gopal Varmas Rangeela is set to return to the big screen this time in a newly remastered 4K HD format. The 1995 romantic drama, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff, will re-release across select theatres on November 28 as part of Ultra Medias Ultra Rewind initiative. Ram Gopal Varmas Rangeela returns to theatres in 4K on November 28, 2025 The re-release aims to reintroduce the films timeless world of dreams, ambition, and unspoken love to a new generation of moviegoers. Confirming the date, Ultra Media said the restored version will showcase enhanced visuals and sound, offering audiences the chance to experience the film as it was meant to be seen. In a statement shared earlier, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma reflected on the films enduring relevance: Rangeela embodied the spirit of aspiration, showing that ordinary people can also dare to dream big. Its success demonstrated that rule-breaking cinema is often the most unforgettable. CEO of Ultra Media, Sushilkumar Agrawal, had also described Rangeela as a nostalgic trip back to the golden era of Bollywood, adding that the restoration ensures its timeless charm continues to mesmerise audiences for years to come. Released in 1995, Rangeela became a milestone in Hindi cinema for its vibrant storytelling, stylish choreography, and A. R. Rahmans iconic soundtrack featuring classics like Tanha Tanha , Haye Rama , and Rangeela Re.Its impact on fashion and film aesthetics marked a turning point for mainstream Bollywood.
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently disclosed that he had first offered the role of Malik in his 2002 gangster drama Company to Shah Rukh Khan. However, after a single meeting with the actor, Varma decided to cast Ajay Devgn instead. Ram Gopal Varma reveals Shah Rukh Khan was first choice for Company before casting Ajay Devgn In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Varma explained, My first instinct was to cast Shah Rukh Khan. I went and narrated the story to him, and he was interested. But I somehow felt Shah Rukh has this natural body language, very energetic, hes like a live wire. The idea of Maliks character was that of a subtle guy, laid-back and cold-minded when hes thinking. I thought SRKs natural energy would go against that. To make Shah Rukh still would be an injustice to both him and the film. Varma further emphasized the difference in acting styles, stating, I think theres a performing actor and then theres an actor. Im not saying one is better than the other, but its just a different style of acting. A guy like Shah Rukh should be left to himself. I think directors trying to make him fit into a different kind of character wont work. But Ajay was naturally suited for that role, hes very calm. Thats when I decided to cast Ajay instead. I just had one meeting with SRK, and in that itself I realised it wouldnt work, but I didnt tell him. Following his decision, Varma contacted Devgn immediately after leaving Khans residence and finalized him for the role. The film also featured Vivek Oberoi, who was cast as Chandru after Abhishek Bachchan, Varmas initial choice, was unavailable due to other commitments. Company , which was the second installment in Varmas gangster trilogy, was both a critical and commercial success. It grossed Rs 25.02 crores against a budget of Rs 9.5 crores and marked Mohanlals debut in Hindi cinema. Ram Gopal Varma is gearing up to collaborate once again with Manoj Bajpayee for their next project, a horror comedy titled Police Station Mein Bhoot.Announcing the film, RGV shared an intriguing line, We run to the police when scared, but where will the police run to when they get scared? After a deadly encounter killing, a police station becomes a haunted station, making all the cops run in fear to escape the ghosts of the gangsters. The story revolves around a police station that turns haunted after a deadly encounter, forcing the officers to flee from the vengeful spirits of slain gangsters. Details about the films release and additional cast members are yet to be revealed.
Bollywoods powerhouse performer Manoj Bajpayee is set to step into the rarely chartered territory, this time with a horror comedy. The actor has teamed up with filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for a new project titled Police Station Mein Bhoot. The announcement came on Monday, September 1, when the makers unveiled a motion poster featuring Bajpayee in a chilling new avatar. #Manoj Bajpayee Manoj Bajpayee reunites with Ram Gopal Varma after 30 years for horror comedy Police Station Mein Bhoot The poster shows the actor dressed as a cop in full uniform, holding a creepy ragged doll smeared with mud and blood, its oversized eyes adding to the eerie vibe. The intense imagery instantly caught fans attention, setting the stage for what promises to be a unique blend of scares and laughs. Sharing the poster on X (formerly Twitter), Bajpayee wrote, #PoliceStationMeinBhoot SHOOT BEGINS. From Satya to now some journeys are meant to come full circle. Thrilled to reunite with @RGVzoomIn after nearly three decades for our new horror comedy Police Station Mein Bhoot. This one is special. @geneliad @VauveEmirates @KarmaMediaEnt #uentertainment #PoliceStationMeinBhootMovie. The post instantly went viral, not only because of Bajpayees striking look but also because of the long-awaited reunion between him and Ram Gopal Varma. Their collaboration dates back to the iconic 1998 gangster drama Satya , which catapulted Bajpayee to fame with his unforgettable role as Bhiku Mhatre. Now, nearly three decades later, the duo is set to explore an entirely different genre together. Adding to the excitement is the presence of Genelia Deshmukh (formerly DSouza), who is expected to play a key role in the film. Genelia was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par , and her return to the big screen in a quirky horror comedy alongside Bajpayee has already generated significant buzz. Police Station Mein Bhoot is being produced by Vauve Emirates Media Production and Karma Media and Entertainment. While details about the storyline remain under wraps, the motion poster and title hint at a spooky yet humorous ride that will blend horror tropes with laugh-out-loud moments. Speaking about the project, Ram Gopal Varma said, Working with Manoj again after Satya is both nostalgic and thrilling. Fear becomes most frightening when it challenges the highest authority of safety, and a police station is the ultimate symbol of power. With Manojs intensity and Genelias vulnerability, this story will push boundaries of how we perceive horror in the guise of authority. Meanwhile, Manoj Bajpayee continues his prolific run in 2025. The actor is also gearing up for the release of Netflixs Inspector Zende on September 5, where he stars alongside Jim Sarbh. And now, with his reunion with Ram Gopal Varma and the addition of Genelia to the cast, Police Station Mein Bhoot has already become one of the most anticipated films of the year.
On August 13, Sridevi would have turned 62. Without a shadow of a doubt, she would have been as relevant at 70 as she was at 34 when she married Boney Kapoor. Ram Gopal Varma, one of the millions of diehard Sridevi fans, went into mourning after her wedding. Exclusive: Ram Gopal Varmas emotional tribute to Sridevi; 75% of India was heartbroken when Sridevi married Recalls Ramu, I was quite heartbroken. I think 75 percent of the male population in India was heartbroken after she got married. Like your favourite Lata Mangeshkar, there will never be another Sridevi. She was perfect in every sense flawless in her comic timing, incomparable in dramatic scenes, and electric in her dancing. I got to direct her only once, in Kshanam Kshanam. It was more than enough proof of what she could do. For every scene, she had 1520 interpretations and expressions. Working with her was like staying at a 7-star hotel you were spoilt for life. He also recalls his first meeting with Sridevi. I had gone to meet her at her residence in Chennai to sign her for a film. I was sitting in the living room with her mother, while Sridevi just flitted in and out of the room, as she was packing to catch a flight. Every time she came into the room, it was like a sudden rush of fresh, invigorating breeze. Ramu has one birthday wish. I want her to come back to earth again. Just once. So that humanity would know she really existed.
Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has weighed in on the ongoing Deepika Padukone-Sandeep Reddy Vanga controversy, offering a candid take that adds a fresh layer to the highly publicized debate on flexible working hours in the film industry. Speaking to Hindustan Times , the Satya director called the entire issue exaggerated, while emphasizing that both directors and actors have the freedom to agree or walk away from work terms. #Ram Gopal Varma Ram Gopal Varma insists that the Deepika Padukone Sandeep Reddy Vanga row is just blown up in the media; says, The whole thing is very exaggerated Ram Gopal Varma, never one to mince words, stated: When it comes to having fixed shift timings for actors, I really think that it is an agreement between two people. Each of them has a right to say what they want, and the other one has a right to refuse. He further added, The whole thing was a very exaggerated thing in my opinion. Because I can say, I want to work for 23 hours, and the actor can say I want to work only for one hour. That's their call. But how can one human being force another human being to do something? And they can agree to work or not work with each other. But that thing was just kind of blown up in the media. The controversy erupted after reports surfaced that Deepika Padukone had opted out of Vangas upcoming film Spirit starring Prabhas, allegedly due to the directors refusal to accommodate her request for flexible working hours a clause the actress reportedly introduced post motherhood. The situation escalated when Triptii Dimri was brought in to replace Padukone, prompting a social media storm and sparking conversations around work-life balance in the film world. While some in the film fraternity have applauded Padukone for setting boundaries and prioritizing personal commitments, others have sided with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, arguing that directors too must retain creative control over their shooting schedules. The debate continues to divide opinions across Bollywood. Ram Gopal Varmas neutral yet pointed take adds a sobering perspective to the noise, reminding the industry that filmmaking, at its core, remains a collaborative endeavour one that relies on mutual consent and professional respect.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 20 : Ram Gopal Varma's 'Satya' returned to theatres on January 17, sharing the screens with Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' and Ajay Devgn's 'Azaad'.The iconic gritty crime drama, which stars Manoj Bajpayee as Bhiku Mhatre and JD Chakravarthy as Satya, has achieved cult status over the years. To celebrate its re-release, the filmmaker shared a deeply emotional note where he reflected on the film and his career since its release, admitting to being "drunk" on his success following the film.In a post shared on his X account, Varma opened up about his emotional experience watching the film again for the "first time in 27 years" and described how deeply moved he felt while rewatching Satya, with "tears rolling down" his cheeks, not only for the film itself but for the journey that followed its success. Varma also went on to explain that the success of films like 'Satya' and 'Rangeela '"blinded him," causing him to lose his creative vision."By the time SATYA was rolling to an end, while watching it two days ago for the first time after 27 years, I started choking with tears rolling down my cheeks and I didn't care if anyone would see. The tears were not just for the film, but were more for what happened since. Making a film is like giving birth to a child originating from the throes of passion without truly realizing what kind of a child I am giving birth to. That's because a film is made in bits and pieces without one really knowing what's being made, and when it is ready, the concentration is on what others are saying about it. After that, whether it's a hit or not, I move on, too obsessed with what's next to reflect and understand the beauty of what I myself created," Varma wrote on X."And I cried in guilt for my betrayals of all those who trusted me due to SATYA. I became drunk, not on alcohol, but on my own success and my arrogance, though I didn't know this until two days ago. When the bright lights of a RANGEELA or a SATYA blinded me, I lost my vision, and that explains my meandering into making films for shock value, or for gimmick effect, or to make a vulgar display of my technical wizardry, or various other things equally meaningless. In that careless process, I forgot such a simple truth: that technique at most can elevate a given content, but it can't carry it," he added."I truly mean this as a wake up call to every filmmaker, who just gets carried away in self-indulgence due to his own state of mind at any given moment without measuring it against the standards set by either themselves or others Finally now i took a vow that whatever little of my life is left, I want to spend it sincerely and create something as worthy as SATYA and this truth I swear on SATYA," he further wrote. Check out the postA SATYA CONFESSION TO MYSELF Ram Gopal Varma By the time SATYA was rolling to an end , while watching it 2 days back for 1st time after 27 yrs, I started choking with tears rolling down my cheeks and I dint care if anyone would see The tears were not Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin) January 20, 2025Written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, Satya is widely regarded as a game-changer in Indian cinema, blending gritty storytelling with memorable performances.
