Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor in Shaukeen remake

10 May 2013

Remember the colossal triumvirate of Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A. K. Hangal lusting after the comely Rati Agnihotri in Basu Chatterjee's 1982 comedy Shaukeen? The remake, to be directed by Rumi Jaffery will star Annu Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher in the three roles. A hunt is on for the sexy young girl's part.

Confirming these developments, the neo- Shaukeen director Rumi Jaffery says, "Yes, we've finalized Annu Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher to play the three roles in Shaukeen . All three actors are National award winners and I can assure you, they won't allow audiences to miss those wonderful actors in the old Shaukeen ." Rishi Kapoor was expected to play one of the three leery old men in the new Shaukeen . But his dates could not be worked out. Anupam gladly stepped into the role. Rumi says it was essential to get the right cast. "Otherwise the comedy of three old men running after a very hot young girl would fall flat." Says Rumi, "I am completely rewriting the Basuda (Chatterjee)'s comedy to suit the changing times. We'll relocate the original comedy from Goa to Thailand and shoot the hot babe and the three old men in the stunning Thai beaches. I want the film to look attractive, eye-catching and captivating. But the comedy won't be cheesy or cheap. I can assure you." In terms of visual aesthetics, Rumi says he wants a look akin to the one in Tarun Mansukhani's Dostana in his Shaukeen. As for the role of Rati Agnihotri's lover from Basuda's film, Akshay Kumar is being sounded out to do the needful.
