Local court acquits Preity Zinta in 2013 cheque bouncing case

22 Mar 2016

Back in 2013, dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala had registered a case against Preity Zinta after a cheque given by her had been dishonoured. However now we hear that on Monday a local court has acquitted Zinta in the case.

As for the case that was filed in 2013, Tyrewala had been approached by Zinta to write eight lines of voiceover for the film Ishq In Paris that was being produced under the latter's banner PZ Media LLP. Since Tyrewala was to deliver the lines on an urgent basis, Zinta had apparently presented him with a cheque as remuneration to the tune of Rs. 21 lakhs, which could be encashed on completion of work. However, in his suite Tyrewala claimed that when he tried to encash it in November, the cheque which was given to him in September 2012, bounced, since the bank had been instructed to stop payment. Since it was dishonoured, Tyrewalla served a notice on PZ Media through its partner Preity Zinta, who had signed the cheque.

In its ruling the Andheri magistrate said the complaint failed to make out any case against the firm and discharged it but issued notice to Zinta. Simultaneously Zinta's defence lawyers S K Jain and Hitesh Jain said that Tyrewala was not enitled to the money since he had not delivered the work as stipulated under the contract and hence was not supposed to encash the amount.

Issuing the acquittal the court has also sought Zinta's presence on April 4 to execute a bail bond, a legal requirement in case of an appeal being filed against the verdict.
